Filie adds VPN support

Filie now fully supports VPNs, including the Nettica VPN Service and Nettica VPN Agent, on all platforms.

How does it work?

On the same Wi-Fi, Filie finds nearby devices by announcing itself with multicast. Most VPNs don't carry those announcements, and neither do many hotel, café and cloud networks, so devices on them can't see each other even though they can reach each other. Filie now lets you add a device by its IP address instead, including its address on a VPN you both use.

Both devices need to be connected to the same VPN, and both need Filie 2.5.4 or later.

Adding a device

1. On your device, open Settings, scroll to Discovery and tap Add devices by IP address. Under This device's addresses you'll see every address it has, each labelled with its network, so your VPN address is easy to pick out.
2. On the other device, open the same screen, get their IP address, enter it into your screen, and tap Add. On Windows, macOS and Linux you can also get there from the + beside Devices on the home screen.
3. Once the other device answers, it is saved as a favorite and shows a By IP pill. You only need to add it on one side — both devices will see each other.

If nothing answers yet, the address stays listed and Filie keeps trying, so you can add it before the other device is even switched on. If something is wrong, Filie tells you what: nothing answered, the device answered but Filie isn't running there, or the other Filie turned the request down because it needs updating. Removing the favorite removes its address too.

Transfers to a device added by IP work like any other local transfer — end-to-end encrypted, and able to fail over to the cloud if the direct path drops.

Filie now runs in your browser

Filie is now on the web at web.filie.com. Open the page and you can send and receive files to any Filie app — no download, no account, no sign-in. It works in any current version of Chrome, Safari, Edge or Firefox, which means Filie now reaches places the app never could:

• a work laptop that is locked down so you cannot install software
• a public terminal at a library or hotel business centre
• a friend's computer you are borrowing for five minutes
• a lab or classroom machine that is wiped every night
• a phone that has run out of room for even one more app

If it has a browser, it has Filie.

The encryption is exactly the same. The browser generates its own device keys on first visit and keeps them where page scripts cannot read them. Files are encrypted before they leave and decrypted only after they arrive, and we never hold a key that could open your transfer.

Sending from the browser gives you a code and a QR code, just like the app, and receiving works the same way in reverse. Once you have sent from a browser, it appears in your app's favorites list, so later transfers need no code at all — just accept them when they arrive. Received files wait in the page until you click each one to save it, with a green check beside the ones you have already taken.

It is also an easy way to try Filie with a single device: install the app on your phone, open the web page in the browser, and send yourself a file or two. Switch back and forth between Filie and the browser to complete your transfer.

Filie's Windows app is now in the Microsoft Store

Filie for Windows is now distributed through the Microsoft's App Store, with automatic updates handled by Windows itself. If you installed Filie directly from this site, you can safely uninstall that copy — your settings and linked devices carry over. By switching our distribution to the Microsoft store, we now fully support Windows Push Notifications, even when Filie is not running, as well as the new Share With experience. There's also a new subscription option available! It's exclusively available in our Windows and Linux apps, and you can Link Devices to all platforms. Filie is now available on Linux

Filie now runs on Linux, with packages available for Debian and Fedora-based distributions through the Nettica repositories. With this update, Filie completes its support for all major platforms. Since there is no single "App Store" for Linux, we provide packages for the most popular distributions. The Linux app supports all of the same features as our other platforms, including Groups, Favorites, and Notifications. It also supports QR Codes and Deep-linking for transfers, device favorites, and groups.
